Water Molecule -- Chemical and Physical Properties.Water is a chemical compound and polar molecule, which is liquid at standard temperature and pressure. It has the chemical formula H2O, meaning that one molecule of water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Water molecules are stabilized by these hydrogen bonds, so breaking up separating the molecules is very hard. The hydrogen bonds account for water’s high boiling point and ability to absorb heat. When water freezes, the hydrogen bonds lock water into an open framework that includes a lot of empty space.

One water molecule can hydrogen bond to four other water molecules. A hydrogen bond is relatively weak, having only about 5 percent the strength of a covalent bond; however, numerous hydrogen bonds are actually quite strong. The hydrogen bonding of water gives it unique qualities. Covalent bonds form between the elements that make up the biological molecules in our cells. Unlike ionic bonds, covalent bonds do not dissociate in water. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms that combine to form water molecules are bound together by covalent bonds.
