Water Molecule -- Chemical and Physical Properties.Water is a chemical compound and polar molecule, which is liquid at standard temperature and pressure. It has the chemical formula H2O, meaning that one molecule of water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Water molecules are stabilized by these hydrogen bonds, so breaking up separating the molecules is very hard. The hydrogen bonds account for water’s high boiling point and ability to absorb heat. When water freezes, the hydrogen bonds lock water into an open framework that includes a lot of empty space.

One water molecule can hydrogen bond to four other water molecules. A hydrogen bond is relatively weak, having only about 5 percent the strength of a covalent bond; however, numerous hydrogen bonds are actually quite strong. The hydrogen bonding of water gives it unique qualities. Covalent bonds form between the elements that make up the biological molecules in our cells. Unlike ionic bonds, covalent bonds do not dissociate in water. The hydrogen and oxygen atoms that combine to form water molecules are bound together by covalent bonds. Water droplets on a leaf: The hydrogen bonds formed between water molecules in water droplets are stronger than the other intermolecular forces between the water molecules and the leaf, contributing to high surface tension and distinct water droplets. -is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon, or carbon bounded to a hydrogen inorganic compund - can be considered as a compound that does not contain a carbon to hydrogen bond, also called a C-H bond.

Figure 4. Hydrogen Bonds between Water Molecules. Notice that the bonds occur between the weakly positive charge on the hydrogen atoms and the weakly negative charge on the oxygen atoms. Hydrogen bonds are relatively weak, and therefore are indicated with a dotted rather than a solid line. Molecules are compounds in which the elements are in definite, fixed ratios, as seen in Figure 12. Those atoms are held together usually by one of the three types of chemical bonds discussed above. For example: water, glucose, ATP. Mixtures are compounds with variable formulas/ratios of their components. Water molecules stay close to each other, due to the collective action of hydrogen bonds between water molecules. These hydrogen bonds are constantly breaking, with new bonds being formed with different water molecules; but at any given time in a sample of liquid water, a large portion of the molecules are held together by such bonds. Chemical bonds hold molecules together and create temporary connections that are essential to life. Types of chemical bonds including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds and London dispersion forces. Between water molecules hydrogen bonds are found which are called as intermolecular hydrogen bonding The water molecule has H-O-H, 2 hydrogen and one oxygen present. The O atom is highly electronegative in comparison to the H atom, hence it attracts the electron pair towards itself, making O atom itself partial negatively charged and H atom partial positively charged.
